Norwich Alderman Charles Jaskiewicz will seek the Democratic Town Committee?s nomination for mayor in November, becoming the second member of the City Council to run for the job.
?This city has so much potential. I would like to redirect a lot of our negative energy into positive energy,? Jaskiewicz, 54, said Saturday.
In a Friday letter to the town committee seeking its nomination, Jaskiewicz expanded on those ideas.
?Since my election to the City Council a little over a year ago, I have brought ideas and experts to our city regarding our harbor and marina that has energized our city to use a natural resource to attract recreational, tourism and economic growth,? Jaskiewicz wrote in the letter, which he provided to The Bulletin. ?As mayor, I would expand my work as a facilitator and team leader for our city, starting with organization.?
Jaskiewicz will hold a press conference at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday ? his 55th birthday ? to formally announce his candidacy.
Deb Hinchey, a fellow Democrat who serves with Jaskiewicz on the council, became the first to enter the race, declaring for the job in early December.
Hinchey, who is already endorsed by town committee Chairman Frank Manfredi and council President Pro Tempore Peter Desaulniers, called Jaskiewicz a ?good candidate.?
?I happen to have faith in myself, and I think it will be a very interesting campaign,? Hinchey said Saturday. ?Having good candidates in the race can only enhance things for the voters.?
Before winning his City Council seat in November 2011, Jaskiewicz served for eight years on the Board of Education, and he currently sits on the state Board of Education.
A regulatory manager at Pfizer, Jaskiewicz said he?d bring a collaborative approach to economic development if voters choose him for mayor.
?The No. 1 priority would be to get Norwich to flourish and grow, but also to work within regional concepts,? he said. ?We need to be poised and ready so when the economy recovers, we?re ready to grow our city in a positive manner economically, educationally and infrastructure-wise.?
Incumbent Mayor Peter Nystrom, a Republican, hasn?t publicly announced whether he plans to seek another term.
