Undeterred by storm, U.S. top court sticks to schedule

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy may shut down much of the federal government and halt public transport in Washington, D.C., on Monday but it will be business as usual at the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices - appointed for life - pride themselves in all manner of staying power.

The country's highest court is keeping to its oral-argument schedule and intends to hear cases through Wednesday, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said late on Sunday.

"It was the decision of the chief justice in consultation with court officials," Arberg said in a reference to Chief Justice John Roberts, who was appointed in 2005.

There is a tradition to this. In 1996, when a major snowstorm closed the federal government and brought Washington, D.C., to a near standstill, court arguments went on. Then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist, a Wisconsin native undeterred by snow and ruled by a strong sense of punctuality, made sure business that January 8 began on schedule.

Roberts, 57, who grew up in Indiana, was once a law clerk to Rehnquist, who died in 2005.

The justices are starting their second two-week round of arguments for the annual term, beginning on Monday with a foreign intelligence wiretap case and a copyright dispute. Non-emergency federal workers have been told to stay home on Monday.

Arberg said court officials would be monitoring the hurricane to determine whether safety factors might require a change in Tuesday's or Wednesday's schedule. Two cases are scheduled for each of those days.

During the January 1996 snowstorm, court officials picked up some of the justices in four-wheel-drive vehicles. Seven of the nine arrived on time for the 10 a.m. opening session. Justice David Souter eventually made it to the bench that Monday. Justice John Paul Stevens, who was in Florida at the time, did not. Both have since retired.

Arberg said she was unaware of any justices who would not make it in on Monday.

Wall St Week Ahead: Jobs data, election may overshadow earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Earnings season may be only half over, but the focus on profits should subside next week as investors turn their attention to the coming election and Friday's jobs report, the last major data release before the November 6 contest.

More bellwether companies are scheduled to report results in what will be another "peak week" of the earnings season. Such a flurry of numbers normally holds Wall Street's attention and can lead to market swings. But volume and volatility may be slight next week, with market participants opting to remain on the sidelines ahead of the jobs data and the election.

The U.S. government's October jobs report will give a snapshot of the current labor market. It could also give a bit of a lift to President Barack Obama, should it come out better than anticipated, or help Republican candidate Mitt Romney - if it is worse than forecast.

Polls currently indicate that President Obama is a slight favorite to win on November 6, but the race will be tight. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters shows the president ahead - 47 percent to 46 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.5 percent this week, largely because of a spate of earnings disappointments. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 1.8 percent this week, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent.

What's notable, however, is that rebounds have been brief and quick to attract sellers.

Some investors cited the approaching election as a barrier to committing new capital to the market.

"Not many people have the stomach to plop down their bets when polling is so close," said Hayes Miller, the Boston-based head of asset allocation in North America at Baring Asset Management. "For the most part, investors will wait and see what happens."

Miller, who helps oversee more than $50 billion in assets, said the trend of caution would be especially pronounced in the health care, financial and energy sectors - three areas that may face different regulatory outlooks, depending on the election's outcome.

"These are the ones really in play," he said.

Expectations for the next nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday, are by no means certain, either. Analysts expect 124,000 jobs were added in October - up 10,000 from September. However, the unemployment rate is also seen ticking higher - to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.

A payroll surprise in either direction could further cloud expectations for the election's outcome.

"A big change in payrolls could cause some uncertainty over the winner," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Alabama. "I don't expect a big surprise, but while the S&P doesn't seem especially vulnerable at these levels, I don't think it is in a hurry to go up, either."

The market will also have to contend with the weather. Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the U.S. East Coast early in the week. New York City officials were considering closing down bus and subway lines next week.

At the New York Stock Exchange, the plans call for business as usual. The exchange issued a statement on Friday saying it has contingency plans to have the market running, adding that it has back-up power generation facilities. The Big Board will make accommodations for critical staff and traders.

Rival marketplace NASDAQ OMX said in a statement that it has plans to make sure its systems are ready. It will communicate with its members before, up to and after the storm.

EARNINGS IN PLAY, IF NOT IN FOCUS

While the market at large may be waiting on news events, individual stocks could still be volatile as earnings season grinds along. More than half of the S&P 500 components have reported results so far. Next week, though, will bring reports from some marquee names such as Dow components Chevron and Pfizer , as well as S&P 500 stalwarts Visa , Ford Motor and Starbucks.

This earnings season, a number of high-profile companies have missed estimates, including this week's sour notes from Apple Inc , United Technologies and DuPont .

With 54 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 62.5 percent have topped earnings expectations, under the 67 percent average over the past four quarters. Just 37 percent have topped revenue forecasts, well under the 55 percent over the past four quarters.

The earnings disappointments led to some intensive selling, driving the Dow industrials down 243.36 points on Tuesday alone.

The S&P 500 has ended down in five of the past seven trading sessions. Those declines have pushed the benchmark S&P under its 50-day moving average of around 1,434, leading some analysts to believe it may be ready for a bounce.

"We'll use any pullback as an opportunity to buy," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. "Even though we've seen a number of companies miss expectations and be overly cautious, we're focusing on how a majority have beaten."

Cobb said next week he was especially looking to results from U.S. Steel Corp . Its stock is down almost 20 percent so far this year.

"Steel companies have been participating really poorly, and I'm anxious to see if that will continue," he said.

Windows 8: Make-or-break moment for Microsoft CEO ...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer can't afford to be wrong about Windows 8.

On Thursday in New York, Microsoft unveiled a dramatic overhaul of its ubiquitous Windows operating system. It will go on sale Friday, fused into more than 1,000 PCs and other devices. If it flops, the failure will reinforce perceptions that Microsoft is falling behind competitors such as Apple, Google and Amazon as its stranglehold on personal computers becomes less relevant in an era of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

If Ballmer is right, Windows 8 will prove that the world's largest software maker still has the technological chops and marketing muscle to shape the future of computing.

"This is going to be his defining moment," said technology industry analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. Ballmer's "legacy will be looked at as what he did or didn't do with Windows 8. If Windows 8 is not a success, a lot of people will be looking for Microsoft to make a change at the CEO level."

Windows 8 is designed to run on PCs and tablet computers, heralding the biggest change to the industry's dominant operating system in at least 17 years. It also marks the first time that Microsoft has made touch-screen control the top priority, though the system can still be switched into the familiar desktop mode that allows for control by keyboard and mouse.

Ballmer sees Windows 8 as the catalyst for a new era at Microsoft. He wants the operating system to ensure the company plays an integral role on all the important screens in people's lives ? PCs, smartphones, tablets and televisions.

"You are going to love the new Windows," Ballmer promised during a Thursday presentation. At other points of his speech, Ballmer hailed the new PCS running on the "bold, innovative" system as the best ever made.

Early reaction has been mixed. Some reviewers like the way the system greets users with a mosaic of tiles displaying applications instead of relying on the desktop icons that served as the welcome mat for years. Critics say it's a confusing jumble that will frustrate users accustomed to the older versions, particularly when they switch to desktop mode and don't see the familiar "start" button and menu.

Windows 8 will hit the market backed by an estimated $1 billion marketing campaign. The advertising frenzy is just one measure of how important Windows 8 is to Microsoft's future.

Ballmer's margin for error is slim after being consistently outpaced by Apple and Google in his nearly 13 years as CEO. During his tenure, Microsoft's stock has lost nearly half its value, wiping out more than $200 billion in shareholder wealth.

But the company's board hasn't expressed any public dissatisfaction with Ballmer, who is Microsoft's second-largest shareholder with a 4 percent stake worth $9 billion. Only his good friend and predecessor, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, owns more of the company's stock. Gates has a 5.5 percent stake.

Since Ballmer succeeded Gates as CEO in January 2000, Microsoft's annual revenue has nearly quadrupled to $74 billion and expanded into lucrative new territory with its popular Xbox 360 video game console, which has given the company a platform for delivering services to television sets. But Microsoft has been slow to respond to technology shifts and has made some costly missteps trying to catch up.

Some of the best-known blunders include the company's iPod clone, the Zune, and its $6.3 billion acquisition of Internet ad service aQuantive.

Ballmer, 56, has spent most of his life at Microsoft. He was attending Stanford University's graduate school of business in 1980 when Gates, a former classmate at Harvard University, persuaded him to drop out and become one of the startup's first 30 employees. He brought more business savvy to the operation just as the company began providing an operating system for IBM Corp.'s first personal computer.

Just two weeks before Ballmer took over, Microsoft's stock reached its peak price. The dot-com bust quickly deflated that market value, and the company became locked in antitrust battles in the U.S. and Europe that distracted management for years.

The biggest question hovering over Windows 8: Is it innovative and elegant enough to lure consumers who are increasingly fond of smartphones, tablets and other sleek gadgets? Those mobile devices have been setting industry standards while Microsoft engineers have spent two years designing a new operating system.

And Windows 8 must address not only the upheaval in the computing market since Windows 7 came out in 2009, but also have the flexibility to adjust to future shifts in technology before Microsoft releases another version in two or three years.

"It doesn't seem like Microsoft is really pushing consumers into the future with Windows 8," said Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. "What Microsoft has done is like buying a pair of shoes for a kid. The shoes may fit exactly right today, but those shoes probably won't fit six months from now."

Previous versions of Windows and other Microsoft products such as Office are so deeply embedded in companies and government agencies that Microsoft is still assured a steady stream of revenue from that segment of the market. That loyal base of customers is one of the reasons that Microsoft is expected to earn $25 billion on revenue of $80 billion in its current fiscal year ending next June.

"This isn't a company that is on the edge of extinction, like some people would have you think," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. "What we are seeing with Windows 8 is classic Microsoft. They let the (technology) market lead and then they follow."

But investors want to see Microsoft do something more. The nagging fear on Wall Street is that the PC industry is past its prime and heading into a gradual decline that will pull down Microsoft, too.

The signs of decay have been proliferating since Apple released the iPad in 2010, hatching a tablet computer market that has combined with an already vibrant smartphone market to siphon away technology spending that used to go toward the latest PCs.

Worldwide PC sales year are expected to decline this year for the first time since 2001, according to the research firm IHS iSuppli. It's a drop of just 1 percent, but it underscores a troubling trend that has been hurting Microsoft.

The shift to mobile devices has whittled Microsoft's worldwide share of the computing device market from 67 percent in 2008 to about 30 percent today, estimates Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett. Thanks to its Android software for phones and tablets, Google is now the leader with a 40 percent share of the computing device market. Apple stands at 20 percent.

Analysts don't expect Microsoft's corporate and government customers to immediately embrace the new system, no matter how much it's hyped. About half of this traditionally cautious group of customers still haven't upgraded to Windows 7. Most analysts expect companies and government to hold off on switching to Windows 8 for at least another year.

Ballmer hopes to accelerate the changeover by making Microsoft's Office software suite more compelling, with the help of two major acquisitions.

Microsoft bought the video chat service Skype for $8.5 billion last year and in June agreed to pay $1.2 billion for Yammer, a service the builds social networking services within companies. Both are expected to become key features within Office to make it easier for workers to connect and collaborate with their peers and customers.

Ballmer also has won praise from analysts for striking potentially fruitful partnerships with Yahoo Inc. and Nokia. Microsoft now provides Yahoo with much of the same technology that runs its Bing search engine. The Yahoo deal provides Microsoft with 12 percent of the revenue from the ads shown alongside search results on Yahoo's website.

The Nokia alliance ensured Windows 8 would be the operating system on that company's latest line of smartphones, a potentially valuable platform if Nokia is able to regain some of the market share it has lost in mobile phones during the past five years.

(Microsoft has also joined with The Associated Press to use AP content in Windows 8 news applications.)

But none of that has yet restored the luster Microsoft had on Wall Street when Gates was in charge.

Ballmer's initially dismissed emerging threats from Google and Apple. He consistently pooh-poohed Google as a one-trick company during its early years and in 2007 declared: "No chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share."

Those were some of his biggest mistakes, detractors say. Google quickly made important inroads in Internet video, online maps, email and mobile computing and contributed to the damage that the iPhone and iPad have done to Microsoft and its partners in the PC market.

Apple's meteoric rise has been especially painful for Microsoft. When Steve Jobs returned to run Apple in 1997, the company was so bad off that it needed a $150 million infusion from Microsoft to stay afloat. Now Apple has a market value of $570 billion ? more than double Microsoft's $235 billion.

On Tuesday, Apple got a chance to upstage Microsoft when CEO Tim Cook showed off the iPad Mini, a smaller and less expensive version of its top-selling tablet.

On Thursday in New York, Ballmer got his chance to herald the arrival of the most important product of his reign. The response to Windows 8 may determine whether it turns out to be the opening act in his vindication or one of his final moments in the spotlight.

Kyrgyz protesters demand closure of Chinese gold mine

October 23, 2012

With resource nationalism rising in Kyrgyzstan, over 200 people joined a demonstration on October 22 in the Kemin district calling for Superb Pacific Limited's operations at its gold mine be shut down.

The demonstration took place outside the Chinese mining company's headquarters in Orlovka. Demonstrators claim that Superb illegally fired several Kyrgyz workers, and polluted the local environment, RFE/RL reports.

Kyrgyzstan has recently seen a wave of protests against international mining companies. The most serious was a demonstration led by the opposition Ata-Zhurt party calling for the nationalisation of the country's largest gold mine on October 3. Around 1,000 people joined the demonstration against Centerra Gold's operation of Kutamor, which ended in clashes with police when Ata-Zhurt leader Kamchibek Tashiyev and around 40 supporters attempted to break into the White House ? the presidential seat in Bishkek.

In September, around 100 residents of the Jalal-Abad region attacked a workers' camp belonging to Spektr, a construction company building a road to the Charaat gold mine, and seized the company's equipment. They claimed that heavy trucks serving the project had damaged local roads.

Nexus 4 appears early at Carphone Warehouse, October 30th release date

Whoa there! The next Nexus just got an early reveal over at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Delivery is currently pegged for October 30th and it's got brand new Android 4.1.2. The preorder listing confirms plenty of details we've already heard, including that 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 display, Snapdragon S4 processor and 8-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, at least according to the phone seller's listing, there's only 8GB of storage and no microSD card slot. Price-wise, it looks like you could get the handset for free on contracts over £31 per month, with both O2 and Vodafone named as prospective networks for the device in the UK -- but no news here on whether the 4G-capable EE will offer an LTE iteration. Excited? Good, because we're going to hear plenty more on this next week.

Ducey: New coach guides Hastings to strong season

The Broncos played under three coaches in three years. But they?ve found stability and success with their new coach, a former assistant at Bellevue and Concordia.

Under Buttermore and his assistant and wife, the former Laura Pilakowski, Hastings has surged to sixth in the NAIA rankings with a 21-3 record. The Broncos are 11-0 and in first in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

?I knew we?d have a good team,? Buttermore said. ?If you?d asked me if we?d be 11-0 in conference, I don?t know if I would have gone that far.?

Buttermore wanted a head coaching position and said he liked the athletic tradition at Hastings. It?s proven to be a perfect fit for him and Laura, a two-time All-American at Nebraska.

The Broncos had a lot of talent and senior leadership, Buttermore said. It was just a matter of building relationships and trust. He could tell that the team was buying into his philosophy after performing well last spring at a tournament at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Behind captains Shayna Schacher, Kendra Schwein and Haley Beardsley, the Lopers are in the top five in every category in the GPAC. Schwein is first in kills (4.3), Beardsley is first in assists (10.5) and Schacher is second in hitting percentage (.312). Schwein and Beardsley are seniors, along with Carissa Kinne, Allison Kern and Kirsten Nickel.

Buttermore is excited at how well his team is performing.

?We?re just good at everything,? he said. ?We really focus on serving, passing and defense and we have some girls who can really hit the ball. We try to hang our hat on ball control.?

The Broncos knocked off second-place Dordt over the weekend. The schedule stays tough with games in the next week against Nebraska Wesleyan, Northwestern and Midland.

?There is no coasting in the GPAC,? Buttermore said. ?We have to keep working hard and maintaining our standards of play.?

Buttermore said he?s been enjoying coaching for the first time with his wife, who is also the team?s strength coach. Laura had been the strength coach at Nebraska from 2004 to ?11.

?She?s been at a program that achieves at a high level,? he said, ?so she knows how things need to be run.?

?Gorilla? is gone for the Lopers

It was a Sunday like no other this season for the University of Nebraska at Kearney football team.

The 1-7 Lopers ended an eight-game skid dating to last season by scoring 21 straight points to defeat Southwest Baptist 34-20 on Saturday.

?The kids were in better moods, the coaching staff in better moods,? coach Darrell Morris said. ?The kids were chatty. You can just tell they felt good about themselves.?

Morris said after a poor third quarter, the Lopers came on strong in the fourth. They also got a few breaks they hadn?t earlier in their first season in the MIAA.

They?ve continued to work hard and stay positive as the losses and injuries piled up.

The win felt great, Morris said.

?You can tell that they got that old 800-pound gorilla off their back,? Morris said. ?Just a sigh of relief.?

UNK plays Central Missouri on Saturday. The 5-3 Mules were upset by 1-7 Northeastern Oklahoma State 24-23 on Saturday.

Nebraska connection at Minnesota State

Nebraska natives have made their presence felt on Minnesota State?s offensive line.

The seventh-ranked Mavericks (8-0) play at Wayne State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Junior guard Andrew Essman of Lincoln Southwest has started 30 games. Center Josh Meeker of Millard West and tackles Gary Hiatt and Max Hofmeister of Millard South are sophomore starters.

Another starter, tackle Chris Reed of Omaha Central, has missed several games with an injured ankle. He?ll find out Tuesday if he can play this week.

Each weighs more than 300 pounds.

?They are just hard-nosed blue-collar Nebraska kids,? offensive line coach Mike Cunningham said. ?They are all good kids and tremendous football players. We?ve had great success with offensive lineman out of Nebraska.?

Cunningham, who is from Milford, Neb., has been coaching at Minnesota State since 2006. Nebraska is one of his recruiting areas.

Other Nebraska starters include linebacker Marcus Hall-Oliver of Omaha Central, who leads the team in tackles with 41. His career total of 124 leads the team. Safety Jordan Hale of Millard South has 27 tackles.

Josh Couch of Millard North has also seen some action. Linemen Garrett Biebl of Millard West and James Anderson of Omaha Burke are redshirting.

Boeing tests microwave missile that knocks out electronics, represents our worst nightmare video

Forget bombs or the robopocalypse. In our minds, the most fearsome weapon is the one that disables our gadgets. That's what makes Boeing's newly tested Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) scarier than most projectiles. The missile bombards targets underneath with microwaves that shut down computers, power systems and just about anything electrical in their path. Thankfully, CHAMP's invisible payload arrives in discrete bursts and arguably makes it the world's most advanced (and likely expensive) non-lethal weapon: the prototype can target multiple individual buildings without ever having to detonate and hurt someone. Boeing is still developing CHAMP in a multi-year program and doesn't have guarantees that it will become military ordnance, which gives us enough time to accept that saving lives is far, far more important than the risk we'll have to stop fiddling with our technology.

"The first casualty of War is Truth" - Iranian Channels Shut Off & Banned on US order/Israel Lobby Pressure

Are these acts a clear indication to an impending war with Iran?
The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has ordered the international broadcast services provider to shut down the Iranian channels, including Sahar, Jam-e-Jam, Islamic Republic of Iran News Network and al-Kowsar.
Press TV was not included in the list of the channels that have been removed.
Israeli lobby groups have reportedly contacted two communications satellite service providers to force them to take Iranian radio and television channels off the air following a recent ban on the broadcasters in Europe, Press TV reports.
One of Europe's leading satellite providers on Monday said it would terminate its contract with Iran's broadcast company, IRIB, immediately pulling 19 state-owned television and radio channels off the air.

Can social media propel Imran Khan to power?

Wajahat Khan / NBC News

Imran Khan, seated at right, prepares to take part in his - and Pakistan's - first ever Google Hangout.

By Wajahat Khan, NBC News

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- In a country known for its constant chaos, nobody can?make a crowd stop and listen quite like Imran Khan.

Whether commanding a rally of hundreds-of thousands in a Lahore park, a roundtable of experts in an Islamabad hotel or a garden of politicized housewives in a Karachi country club, Pakistan's legendary former cricket captain exudes charisma.?Even his unfinished?"peace rally" to protest hugely unpopular U.S. drone strikes?-?which Pakistani officials halted before it reached its destination in South Waziristan -?earned him headlines around the world.

Khan, 60, is widely seen as one of the country's most popular politician as well as its most eligible bachelor. ?And if?opinion polls are to be believed, he?will?play a key role in the formation of Pakistan's next government.?

But Khan is not business as usual for Pakistan.

He commands serious star power despite not belonging to the landed or industrial dynasties that have ruled the country since its birth in 1947. Nor is he part of the country's military, which has governed the Islamic Republic for more than three of its six and half decades. Instead, he shot to fame as a star of cricket, a game that has a near-religious following in Pakistan.? On his way, he married - and divorced - glamorous British socialite Jemima Goldsmith.

He does not appear to court the traditional media, although it certainly chases him.?

The waiting list for television anchors and reporters hoping to snag a one-on-one with Khan is around two months long. He has written-off Pakistan's rambunctious mainstream and privately owned media as "prone to being corrupt" and "marginal to vested interests."

So what is the secret to Khan's success in projecting his political agenda across Pakistan?? In short, it's what he calls the "democratic and incorruptible" forces of Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media.

Despite security concerns, presidential candidate Imran khan leads an anti-drone rally, including 30 Americans, into Pakistan's badlands. Amna Nawaz reports.

Khan's messages -- which almost always hinge on his apparent anger?over the United States' demands on Pakistan -- make him the country's most-followed presence on Facebook and Twitter. ?He is particularly popular among Pakistan's wired urban youth. ?But while Khan's popularity online cannot be contested, whether it will translate into victory at the ballot box remains the big question.?

'Taliban Khan'
Critics contend that Khan is simply bitter about criticism he's received from established members of the media. ?In particular, journalists and commentators question?the former cricket star's popular but difficult to implement policies?--?an end to official corruption within 90 days,?cessation of?all hostilities with militants, halt to CIA drone attacks and rejection of American aid.

Especially since the assassination attempt on a 14-year-old education activist Malala Yousufzai, Khan's refusal to wholeheartedly condemn all militancy and terror has prompted his critics to call him soft on terror.?

While Khan's ideas have earned him the teasing but telling moniker "Taliban Khan" from members of the Westernized elite,?they have proved wildly popular online. ?

Pakistan's Generation Y battles to shape country's future

There is the?official Facebook page for Khan?(with about 487,000 'likes'). Its fans outnumber?his party's official page?by more than 100,000 members.

The?"We Want Imran Khan to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan" page?also has more than 525,000 likes.

Wajahat Khan / NBC News

Badar Khushnood (foreground), a consultant with Google Pakistan, and a small army of Imran Khan's advisors and assistants tweet, shoot and text their way through the Hangout.

Khan also has about 400,000 followers on Twitter -- along with several assistants handling his and attached accounts -- tweeting rants, pictures and quotes from Pakistan's founders around the clock.

?

If social-media popularity equaled election results, Khan would already have a few terms under his belt. ?In fact, so pervasive is his online persona that his detractors have branded him a virtual politician. ?

However, while Khan might be the country's most popular political figure, he is hardly the Islamic Republic's most powerful; he boycotted the last election and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) or Movement for Justice party, has?no presence in a parliament.

US, Pakistan should 'divorce,' ex-ambassador to Washington says

Wired, but do they vote?
Whether Khan can translate online support into victory at the ballot box is highly contested. (When new elections will actually be held hasn't been decided although many expect them to be held in spring or summer 2013.)?

?

"Imran Khan's base, his core support, is urban, middle class and educated -- precisely the cohort that has access to the Internet and spends time online," Cyril Almeida, who pens one of Pakistan's most-read columns for?Dawn newspaper, told NBC News. "Hence, his substantial online support. ... PTI is building a voter base starting from the social media."

?Almeida?acknowledges?that former President Pervez Musharraf -- who led the country from 2001 to 2008 and now lives in exile in London -- also has a substantial online following but "wouldn't win a local?councilor?seat if he stood for one."

"Imran is somewhere in between," Almeida said. "His rock star status online is wildly more exaggerated than his real-world support -- though he will win at least some seats come election time."

Thousands rally for Malala, girl shot by Taliban

Others, like Fahd Hussain, a primetime anchor?at Waqt TV, which belongs to one of Pakistan's oldest and most conservatively aligned news conglomerates, says the Internet could still generate a Khan "tsunami."

"[The] social media support base of Imran should not be ignored," Hussain said. "It's massive and growing and creates political momentum."

Others question what online popularity will translate into, if anything.

Gibran Peshimam, the political editor of the?Express Tribune newspaper, says that while Khan may be a heavyweight on the Internet, he is more of a lightweight offline. ?

"The percentage of Pakistan's population that has access to the Internet barely breaks the double-digit barrier," he told NBC News. "In any case, the majority percentage of those who have this access to the Internet, and hence social media, is a non-voting sector. The well-to-do generally do not vote in Pakistan. They talk about voting, but barely any of them are even registered to vote."

"Large-scale support on the Internet in Pakistan does translate into numbers, given the youth bulge, but it certainly does not translate into large numbers -- unlike, perhaps, in the U.S.," he added.

Dr Awab Alvi is Imran Khan's social media guru. A part-time politico, Alvi is an Ivy-League trained orthodontist by day, and the brains behind the powerful outfit that is Khan's social media machine by night.

Echoes of Obama '08?
The comparison to the United States is a common one in Pakistan, and linked to the Khan camp's obsession with President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign in which social media played a key role in fundraising as well as getting younger Americans out to vote. So-called Khanophiles constantly point to the Obama '08 template as one that can be replicated, with some qualifications and modifications, in the Islamic Republic.

Two such Khanophiles are Awab Alvi and Faisal Javed.

Alvi is a tall, soft-spoken and self-declared geek who signs his emails as BDS, MSc & TED Senior Fellow.

Although Alvi, is a?University of Pennsylvania-trained orthodontist?who says he does not hold any office in the burgeoning PTI, the 36-year-old's?non-stop Twitter feed gives him away as Khan's constantly-connected social media wizard. ?His user ID,?Teeth Maestro, one of the best known in Pakistani cyberspace, hints at both his full-time hospital job in Karachi and his part-time political potency.

His blogs generate as much revenue as a successful small business, and the official site of the PTI that he helps administer often crashes because of the high traffic his online events generate. ?Alvi says the PTI has a 25-strong social media team featuring "volunteers scattered all over the globe."

More Pakistan coverage from NBC News

Faisal?Javed, 31, is a telecom executive by day and a PTI deputy secretary by political leaning. He spends Monday to Friday at the chic Islamabad headquarters of Telenor, leading the Scandinavian cellular giant's advertisement buying and content strategy for Pakistan.

Wajahat Khan / NBC News

Faisal Javed is Imran Khan's deputy information secretary and acted as moderator for the Google Hangout. Javed's full time job is as a telecom executive, but he moonlights as a politico.

?But his evenings and weekends are reserved for the PTI. ?Javed, who opens rallies for Khan, is known nationally as Khan's "stage secretary,"?introducing him to?crowds across the country. His easy confidence and broadcaster's voice make him one of the more prominent young faces of Khan's media-savvy corps.

Behind the scenes at Khan's first Google+ Hangout, the zeal to replicate Obama's PR accomplishments was obvious. ?As soon as Khan rolled in (along with a small army of assistants, advisers and bodyguards), Alvi and his team adopted a very American, no-nonsense mood that is not typical of Pakistani culture.

They kicked out all people dubbed "non-essentials" and started what seemed like a haphazard pre-battle briefing.

"How many people are watching me?" Khan asked.

"Thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions might be watching," said Alvi and his lieutenants speaking over each other.

Khan: "What does this mean, 'Google Hangout'?"

Alvi/his geeks: "People submitted questions, and then voted in the most questions. In three days, 15,000 questions were submitted and 13,000 questions were crowd-sourced via (text messages)."

Khan: "Is this live?"

Alvi/his geeks: "Yes! Obama has done it too! Ten people from all over the country and the world will interact with you. The questions and questioners have been chosen. All you have to do is answer them."

Americans ignore great risks, travel to Pakistan to protest US drone strike

The audio wouldn't connect for 20 minutes after the Hangout was scheduled, and even as the event went online, some anchors on Pakistan's infamous conspiracy-theory driven national television denounced the event as a "drama" which was "staged" and "not live," much to Alvi and his team's chagrin. ?

A small Twitter/Facebook skirmish between the Khan camp and his detractors later ensued, where both sides argued over the "reality" of the Hangout. The skirmish lasted about a week.

Imran Khan, the man who wants to be the next prime minister of Pakistan says the "war on terror is creating militants." Khan also referred to Pakistan's army as a "hired gun" and said it must stop fighting the Taliban in Pakistan. ITN's Mark Austin reports.

But overall the Hangout event went pretty much as planned. Khan waxed eloquent about the economy, militancy, America, education and Pakistan's several other existential crises. He promised to raze the walls of governors' mansions, pledged to make them public libraries and explained progressive taxation to a female college student.

In what was perhaps the most important sign of success, the event caused #HangoutwithIK to trend on Twitter. But what really made political history in Pakistan was that the national conversation of the country was fully online and not broadcast on television and radio for the first time.?

In Pakistan's largest city, 'Old Glory' is flammable and profitable

Later, Javed unwound with a Marlboro.

"You know why he did it? You know how he handled all those questions? Because he's neat and clean and has nothing to hide," he said.

What of the rural heartland?
Still, even if Khan's PTI wins seats in parliament on the back of his social-media campaign, he is still a long way from power, some?analysts say.?

"The next step, to premiership, goes through the dusty, deceitful and a whole-lot-less-plugged-in territory of Pakistan's rural heartland," political editor Peshimam says.

Most of Pakistan's civilian power players have traditionally relied on the country's teeming rural areas for their support-bases.

Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party, which leads the current coalition government, is entrenched in rural Sindh ?-- the country's second-most populous province. Nawaz Sharif's?Pakistan Muslim League (N-???) has always relied on, and thus come to dominate, the lush swathes of central and northern Punjab.

Aid workers become targets in Pakistan

While Khan is pushing hard to topple the de facto but unofficial two-party system by becoming a third force via social media, Pakistan remains a poor and rural-majority country where just 20 million of its 180-million people are connected to the Internet.

Wajahat Khan / NBC News

Members of Imran Khan's press corps at work.

"Several polls show that as a leader Imran Khan is very popular," says Raza Rumi, director of policy and programs at Islamabad-based think tank The Jinnah Institute. "(But) there are methodological problems with such surveys and often their urban bias has also been called into question.

"Khan will emerge as a political player in the next parliament but it would be premature to say what would be the strength of his party," Rumi added.?"His huge presence on social media is linked to a substantial following, especially in the young segment of population. There is a strong relationship here. But to assume that Facebook or Twitter rankings will result in electoral gains across Pakistan would be wrong."

But Khanophiles like Javed, the telecom executive, aren't?discouraged?by such such sober assessments.?

"We can't ignore this medium. ?There are two million of us [supporting PTI on social media]. And those two million have millions of friends and family members,"?he said during preparations for the Google+ Hangout session.?

A group of 32 American anti-drone activists will join a march to Pakistan's tribal areas, where U.S. strikes have killed thousands of people over the last eight years. NBC News Amna Nawaz spoke to some of them.

"And while you may be right again that those two million are largely in the cities, they are a degree or two away from spreading our message to the towns and villages. And that's good enough for me."

(AP) ? Drought, frost and hail have combined to ravage Europe's wine grape harvest, which in key regions this year will be the smallest in half a century, vintners say.

Thierry Coste, an expert with the European Union farmers' union, said Wednesday that France's grape harvest is expected to slump by almost 20 percent compared with last year. Italy's grape crop showed a 7 percent drop ? on top of a decline in 2011.

"Two big producing nations, France and Italy, have not known a harvest so weak in 40 to 50 years," Coste said. "All the major producing nations have been hurt."

France's Champagne and Burgundy regions were hard hit by weather conditions that particularly affected the prevalent Chardonnay grape, used to make the world's most famous sparkling wine and the luxurious whites from those regions.

In places where vintners were already facing a small margin of profit, many could be facing survival problems, said Coste of the Copa-Cogeca union.

"In certain regions, there will be many vintners in big difficulties because of the collapse of the harvest," he said.

The European wine harvest automatically has a global impact since it accounts for some 62 percent of the worldwide wine production.

In Europe, about 2.5 million families live off the wine sector. It makes the dependency on the vagaries of weather a sometimes cruel business.

Drought hit the Mediterranean rim hard this year, Coste said. As a cooperative leader in southern France's Herault region, he should know.

"First and foremost, climate change or not, we see that we have ever more dry spells," he said. Making matters worse is that even winter was dry this time. "It was almost zero (degrees Celsius) in the south."

In the northern wine regions, it was the inverse, with cold and wet weather wreaking havoc. Hail in particular hurt the crops.

"Natural phenomena happened all at the same time to make sure the harvest is so small," Coste said.

French figures show that in Champagne the harvest could decline by 40 percent, with Bourgogne Beaujolais expected to decline 30 percent. Bordeaux would get away lightly with a drop of 10 percent.

Coste said there may be an upside to the bad harvest ? it is not a bitter one when it comes to taste. The quality of the wine produced will be good as it is expected to be more concentrated.

"When it comes to quality, we are looking at a good year," Coste said.

While some price increases were on the cards, Coste hoped they could be contained.
