Londonderry radio amateur Jimmy Porter GI3GGY passed away on Wednesday, November 7, aged 92
Jimmy GI3GGY was the longest serving reader on the RSGB GB2RS news service having broadcast for over 50 years. He used to put out a strong signal across the UK and Europe from his station on the 40 metre band.
The GB2RS history page says that in 1954 the RSGB Secretary John Clarricoats, G6CL, asked Jimmy Porter, GI3GGY, in Londonderry to carry out some test transmissions from his home in Northern Ireland on 7047.5kc/s [kHz] using AM telephony. Jimmy commenced an experimental newsreading under his own callsign on 14 March 1954.
Jimmy first discovered electronics at the age of 15, received his amateur radio licence GI3GGY around 1949 and established a Radio and TV business,
He was associated with the pirate station Radio Free Derry which ran from 1969 to 1972 and Jimmy intercepted both Military and Royal Ulster Constabulary radio communications in the late 60's and early 70's. The recording of military communications that he made on January 30, 1972 were to attract widespread media attention.
