Jordanians call for more protests over price hikes

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Some Islamists and activists in Jordan are calling for a third straight day of nationwide protests over fuel price hikes.

Two days of angry demonstrations have threatened to plunge the U.S.-allied kingdom into a wave of unrest.

Abdullah Obeidat, head of the engineers' union of mostly Islamists and left-leaning activists, says the protests would take place after noon prayers in the capital, Amman, and throughout Jordan.

The call came although many Muslims are observing the Islamic New Year holiday on Thursday.

The government's decision earlier this week to raise fuel prices sparked violent protests in Jordan, unseen since the start of the Arab Spring nearly two years ago. One man was killed and 13 police officers were among 17 seriously wounded on Wednesday.
