Google Isn't Making Any Profit From Sales Of The ... - Business Insider

Don't expect Google's new Nexus 7 tablet to help the company's profit margins.

Andy Rubin, Google's head of mobile, told AllThingsD that the new tablet is basically being sold at cost through Google's online store.

"There's no margin," he said in the interview. "It just basically gets (sold) through."

In fact, Rubin says the company is eating the marketing costs for the device.

This allows Google to keep the price tag at $199, so it won't price itself out of competing with other cheaper tablets like the Kindle Fire. And just like with the Kindle Fire, sales of the new Nexus 7 tablet could potentially drive sales of other Google products like e-books and apps.

CSR for HR: CSR for HR: Getting the message through

It's easy to assume things. It's easy to assume that, if you have a policy in place, and you have communicated it, or even posted it on an employee portal somewhere, that?employees will notice it. Such assumptions rarely turn out to be true, and in?the case of Human Resources,?it's rather a lazy and irresponsible?basis for?performing the HRM role.?As employees are core stakeholders in any business, HR should not underestimate the need for a proactive process to ensure employees are aware of their rights, entitlements, the policies which affect their working lives and also, of course, their duties and obligations. This is simply good HR. But it's also good CSR.

It is not enough to get the message across.
You have to get the message THROUGH.

A recent article in People Management?reports that:? "Nearly half of all employees are not aware of their company?s HR policy ... In a poll of 1,000 workers, only 53 per cent claimed to have knowledge of their employer?s HR guidelines and even fewer (43 per cent) were aware of their company?s structure. Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of those canvassed understood their firm?s corporate social responsibility policy and only 27 per cent knew of their employer?s service guidelines...."
This is squarely in the Human Resources professional camp and should be regarded as a core HR-CSR responsibility of HR Managers.

This responsibility is two-fold:

first, deliver a process in which?HR Managers?proactively ensure employees are provided with the relevant information and have the opportunity to ask questions

second, design a process for ensuring that HR gets positive confirmation that this?is implemented in practice.

Pushing out policies is not the value that HR adds. Getting the message through and engaging the minds and hearts of employees to deliver outcomes which support the business, is the value.

HR Managers: Wake up to CSR!
Wake up to your unique role in your business and to your responsibilities.?

B.o.B, Taylor Swift Salute Everyman In 'Both Of Us' Video

Pair examine everyday life in Nashville in new Jake Nava-directed video.
By Jocelyn Vena

B.o.B in his video for "Both of Us"
Photo:

If you've ever wondered what would happen if B.o.B and Taylor Swift hung out together in Nashville and hired video director Jake Nava to film it, well, wonder no more.

The twosome are committing their song collaboration to celluloid in the just-released clip for the rapper's track "Both of Us," which features the country-pop superstar on the hook.

But if you thought the video would pay homage to the glittering honky-tonks of Nashville, think again. This video instead sheds light on the grittier sides of the country music capital, following the lyrics of the track, which center on adversity and strife. Bobby Ray and Taylor are rarely seen in the same shot, as southern Americana is the twosome's most prominent co-star.

The clip opens with B.o.B hanging out in his modest home, while Swift is chilling out in the most un-Taylor Swift spot in music video history, a pool hall. There are shots of tatted locals, cowboy-boot-wearing young women, shirtless youths playing in sprinklers, teens kissing, a mobile home, and a dog that leaves Taylor awestruck with his high-flying antics.

The video isn't glamorous, but it leaves viewers appreciating the little things in life. It's not about money, it's about understanding that sometimes a romp through a sprinkler or a good game of billiards is enough to take you away from the mundane moments of everyday life.

As the video closes out, viewers are left with a sort of fantasy, with B.o.B and Swift re-imagined as the everyman and everywoman living simple lives in rural Tennessee, much like the folks in the video.

It's like B.o.B says in the song: "Hey, but if it's all for one and one for all/ Then maybe one day we all could ball/ Do it one time for the underdogs/ From Bobby Ray to all of y'all." Swift shares in the sentiment when she answers on the chorus, "I wish I was strong enough to lift not one but both of us/ Someday I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us."

The track is off B.o.B's album Strange Clouds. Swift and the MC shot the clip in Music City, USA in mid-June, weeks prior to the official release.

"It is with great sadness that we report that Nora Ephron has died," her publisher Alfred A. Knopf, said in a statement. "She brought an awful lot of people a tremendous amount of joy. She will be sorely missed."

The New York Times cited her son, Jacob Bernstein, as saying Ephron died. Bernstein is a freelance reporter for the Times.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a statement calling the loss "a devastating one" for the city's arts and cultural community.

"From her earliest days at New York City's newspapers to her biggest Hollywood successes, Nora always loved a good New York story, and she could tell them like no one else," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Ephron, who often parlayed her own love life into movies like "Heartburn" and gave her acerbic take on aging in the 2010 essay collection, "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections," had kept her illness largely private except for close friends and family.

The elegant Ephron, known for habitually dressing in black, urged aging friends and readers to make the most of their lives.

"You should eat delicious things while you can still eat them, go to wonderful places while you still can ... and not have evenings where you say to yourself, 'What am I doing here? Why am I here? I am bored witless!'" she told Reuters in a 2010 interview while promoting the book.

She began her career as a journalist but transitioned into movies, leaving behind a legacy of more than a dozen films, often featuring strong female characters, that she either wrote, produced or directed. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for "Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and the drama "Silkwood" with Meryl Streep playing an anti-nuclear activist.

Other romantic comedies included "You've Got Mail," starring Meg Ryan, and her last film "Julie & Julia" in 2009, which had Streep portraying the fearless celebrity cook Julia Child.

Ephron also wrote for the stage, authoring the 2002 play "Imaginary Friends" about the rivalry of authors Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman, and "Love, Loss and What I Wore," with her sister Delia, in 2009.

Unsecured Loans: Get the Money Instantly

?

It does not matter at all if there is any function of ceremony or any wedding organization. You are able to celebrate these functions with a great fervor even there is shortage of the sufficient amount because you are able to borrow the amount by taking the help of unsecured loans. These loans are really very much helpful for the borrowers, who depend on their permanent job and do not have the ample amount at the present time. Job-holders are able to make the most of the presence of the scheme that does not have to do anything with the collateral of the borrowers.

?

These loans are purposely and particularly organized for those people, who are having the stable job. But they are not ready to put the valuable asset as collateral because they are afraid if they have to lose the valuable collateral in case of not being able to refund the borrowed amount.

It means that these loans can be obtained by those folks, who neither have home nor collateral. Hence, it is very good opportunity for those applicants, whop need the fund with no need of the placement of the security in the face of the lender.

?

Non-collateral holders and non-home owners have to pay off a bit higher interest rate because the lender of unsecured loans does not ask the applicants to fax any sort of personal papers. In this way, it does not consume a lot of precious time of the jobbers. Online mode is also available for the borrowers to fulfill the criteria quickly because online loan application form is available online at the free of cost.

And the clients are able to mention the necessary personal information into the loan application form. Thus, filled up loan application form is instantly and electronically submitted and approved within few hours. And the required amount in the range of ?1000 to 25000 is mechanically and immediately wired into the six months old valid bank account of the borrowers within the next working day.

?

With the help of the gained amount, the applicants are able to meet up their entire needs and wants with no more hesitation. But the borrowed amount must be paid back within the certain period of time that is from 1 to 10 years. Unsecured loans can be procured by the worst credit holders also if they are gifted with the eligibilities. Owing to absence of security these loans carry a bit high interest rate but you can minimize it by doing a systematic research of online loan market.

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung updated Judge Koh enjoins sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Update: All Things D got a copy of Koh's order, and we just gave it a quick read. Turns out that she granted the injunction due to the strength of the merits of Apple's case and the unlikelihood that Samsung would invalidate Apple's design patent -- the court already held that the 10.1 is "virtually indistinguishable" from the iPad's design and likely infringes Apple's IP. Furthermore, Judge Koh held that, because Apple and Samsung are direct competitors in the tablet space and "design mattered more to customers in making tablet purchases," Apple would be irreparably harmed by further 10.1 sales. Those two factors outweighed any hardship suffered by Samsung, and thus, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stricken from US shelves.

LastPass Premium Password Manager (for Android)

It's hard to believe something as utilitarian as a password manager has such diehard fans, but LastPass, our Editors' Choice winner for both free and premium ($1/month, direct) desktop-based password managers, has a cult following. Converts swear by this tool?a Web service that securely stores passwords and login information, decrypts them locally, and automatically fills them in for you as you browse on your PC or Mac.

LastPass Password Manager Premium (free for Premium subscribers) lets you access your vault of saved logins and other login data on the go. It performs much better thanks to a recent update, but still takes too much work to auto-complete fields. Yes, it beats other mobile password managers like Dashlane (for iPhone) (free, 3.5 stars) and Keeper 5.0 for Android (free, 3 stars), but I'm reserving Editors' Choice judgment for when Dashlane releases its Android app this July. Dashlane currently shares the Editors' Choice award for desktop-based password managers, with LastPass.

Get Started?Through Your Desktop
I like apps that are easy to use the minute I download them. LastPass is not one of these. When I first launched the app, I saw a blank screen and couldn't figure out what to do?it turns out I was staring at an empty Vault, or a list of saved login information and other data. This is fine if you've already set up a LastPass account through the desktop client, but definitely not if the app is your first experience with LastPass.

Upon the advice of a LastPass spokesperson I started entering passwords for storage through my desktop browser. As you browse on your desktop, you?re prompted to save new login information and personal details commonly used to fill out generic forms (called Form Fill profiles). You can organize these into folders, like you would with bookmarks. Because this is a cloud-based service, LastPass quickly syncs your account information across PC, Mac, BlackBerry, iOS, Android, and a Dolphin HD browser plug-in.

Managing your Vault through the app itself is difficult. There are no auto-prompts when you create new accounts, and auto-filling is tedious to use unless you launch saved sites in LastPass?s slow, mediocre built-in browser. Forget about Flash or geolocation support there.

Some mobile sites, like banking sites, don't even let you auto-fill information, though this is due to the way banks code their mobile websites. The safest workaround is to download your bank's app and use LastPass to log in.

One neat feature is the ability to use LastPass to log into your apps. Simply tap and hold a login field and select Input Method/LastPass to find and fill in your login information.

Got a dirty secret to record on the fly? LastPass also lets you enter unclassifiable jibberish into a Secure Note; you can attach photos, PDFs, and voice memos as well. Your subscription comes with 50 MB of free encrypted storage. Pretty neat.

Improved Input Method
My biggest complaint about the previous version was its lousy input method when using other browsers. It didn't always work for me; now it does. When you encounter a form field you'll find a LastPass asterisk (*) on your keyboard, though at the moment it only supports the stock Android keyboard. Tap this to open your LastPass vault within the browser and select which login information to auto-fill. If you don't want to use the built-in browser, LastPass has a couple weak alternatives. You can install bookmarklets-- a tiny Java script contained in a bookmark ? that work with Opera, Chrome, and IE. When you reach a site in your browser that requires a log-in, launching the bookmark will switch to LastPass and log in to that site. If you prefer to stay in Safari, you can install bookmarklets that will automatically fill forms and passwords. The process isn't quite as simple as adding bookmarklets on a PC, so LastPass recommends installing them on a desktop browser and syncing them over. LastPass also offers free plugins to use with third-party browsers like Dolphin HD and Firefox Mobile, although they're as tedious to use as the browser.

Better, But Lags Behind Desktop Experience
LastPass for Android is a solid app for securely storing passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. However, without automated actions and prompts, it?s not nearly as useable as the Editors? Choice-winning desktop application. Furthermore it doesn?t support alternative keyboards, and I don?t think it?s far-fetched to say most of us would rather eschew LastPass than our favorite keyboard.

The app is faster and better performing than ever, but its built-in browser has a lot of work to do. LastPass (for Android) is the best of the password managers for Android that I've reviewed so far, but I'm reserving Editors' Choice judgment until I see Dashlane on Android, which is expected to come out this July.

ECA's Janneh says agric programme CAADP holds key to Africa's food

You Are Here: Home ? Africa/International ? ECA?s Janneh says agric programme CAADP holds key to Africa?s food security

Page last updated at Monday, June 25, 2012 11:11 AM //

Abdoulie Janneh

The Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Abdoulie Janneh believes that the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) championed by the?African Union (AU) could help Africa achieve food security.

According to the ECA boss, in order to achieve food security, Africa?s agriculture needs to be transformed through an integrated approach to ?more productive, competitive and market-oriented agricultural systems grounded on sustainable farming systems and business models.?

And the AU?s CAADP could help Africa achieve this transformation, Mr Janneh said during a side event on ?Green growth and sustainable development: regional perspectives? organized by the five UN Regional Commissions at the margins of the just ended Rio+20 in Brazil.

CAADP is a coherent African-led and African-owned framework targeted at achieving an annual growth rate of 6 percent in agriculture, ?developing dynamic domestic and regional agricultural markets making Africa an exporter of agricultural products and strategic player in agricultural science and technology development and ensuring sustainable management of the natural resource base.

In a statement issued by the ECA, Janneh said the CAADP offers a sound road map to achieving food security while greening the agricultural sector, through the extension of agricultural area under sustainable land management and water reliable water control systems; improving rural infrastructure and trade related capacities; increasing food supply through improved policies and improving agricultural research, technology dissemination and adoption.

About 30 African countries have signed the CAADP compact which calls for aligning national agricultural development strategies with the CAADP framework, while 24 have prepared an investment plan to implement the compact.

Janneh said that in order for Africa to realize the CAADP promise and its full potential of greening agriculture for enhanced food security, the continent?s farmers should be ?linked backward to agricultural input markets and forward to product markets which, with rapid urbanization, are increasingly demanding for processed food and agricultural products?.

Decisive political, policy and institutional ?actions, according to him are also required to address the current high degree of fragmentation and weak integration of the African agricultural market space along too many national and subregional lines, which, Janneh said, does not provide the incentives for private-sector investment and intra-regional production and trade.

The UN official indicated that fewer than 10 African countries had, themselves allocated 10% of their budget to agriculture as agreed at the African Union Summit in Maputo almost ten years ago.

He observed that that due to years of neglect, African agriculture is still marked by smallholder subsistence farms, low technology agricultural production systems and poor infrastructure while private investment in the sector had been impeded by a lack of enabling policy and institutional environments.

Several missing after roof collapse at mall in Canada

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario (AP) ? Rescue teams and dogs searched through the rubble Sunday at a shopping mall in Canada where a roof collapsed through two floors, leaving several people missing and 22 people slightly injured.

Authorities said no casualties have been reported and the names of the missing continue to be crossed off the list as members of the community account for their loved ones. But a number of people remain unaccounted for since the collapse Saturday afternoon at Algo Centre Mall in the northern Ontario city of Elliott Lake.

Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services said 40 members of the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team were removing pieces of the structure in an effort to extricate anyone who might have been trapped.

Kate Matuszewski, a spokeswoman for city, said emergency services were removed at one point Saturday due to safety issues.

Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Percy Jollymore urged anyone worried about missing loved ones to check in at an information center where police are tracking those who are unaccounted for.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court, exposing metal and concrete supports. The collapse left behind a gaping hole which was 12 meters (39 feet) by 24 meters (79 feet), downed hydro lines and triggered a gas leak.

Emergency officials quickly cleared out the mall and closed surrounding roads. Mayor Rick Hamilton declared a state of emergency.

Ontario Provincial Police said 22 people were taken to hospital but none were seriously hurt.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was in touch with Elliot Lake's mayor and thanked emergency crews in the city for their efforts.

"As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community," McGuinty said in a statement.

Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, said several cars appeared to have fallen through the gaping hole near some escalators.

"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," he said. "Everybody was cleared from the whole mall. After that, there was numerous police and emergency vehicles coming from all over."

Shopper Jean-Marc Hayward was having coffee when the roof collapsed about 20 feet (6 meters) from him. He said a big hunk of concrete tumbled down through two floors and that it sounded like an explosion. "It was a big loud crash. It didn't just go down one floor it went down two floors," he said.

Hayward said a lottery terminal kiosk was located directly under the roof that caved in.

Hayward said he saw one man with a bloody face. Hayward, a dwarf who has trouble with his legs, said he couldn't run out.

"I was sucking in dust," he said.

Hayward and others have said the mall roof has leaked water for some time. There have long been buckets and tarps around the mall to collect leaking water, Hayward said.

"It's obvious there has been a lot of damage in the structure because of the water," Hayward said. "A couple of years ago they said they fixed all the leaks in the mall, but they didn't. You could tell every time it rained."

Powell could not confirm if rescue officials had been briefed about the water leaking issue.

The two-level mall in this northern Ontario community is approximately 200,000 square feet (18,580 sq. meters). It houses a grocery store, restaurants, a number of retail outlets, a hotel, and the constituency office for a member of the provincial parliament.

Rhonda Bear, a spokeswoman for the mall, which is run by Eastwood Mall Incorporated, said the company was referring all questions on the collapse and the condition of the mall to its lawyer, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

"All our concern right now is our prayers are with the families," Bear said.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Republican Gov. Terry Branstad has made Iowa one of the most difficult states in the nation for felons to vote, with an executive order he issued last year already having disenfranchised thousands of people, a review by The Associated Press shows.

On the day he took office, Branstad signed an order reversing a six-year policy started under Democrat Tom Vilsack in which felons automatically regained their voting rights once they were discharged from state supervision. The move flew in the face of a nationwide trend to make voting easier for felons, making Iowa one of four states where felons must apply to the governor to have voting rights restored. Branstad's new process requires applicants to submit a credit report, a provision critics call inappropriate and unique among states.

Since then, 8,000 felons in Iowa have finished their prison sentences or been released from community supervision, but less than a dozen have successfully navigated the process of applying to get their citizenship rights back, according to public records obtained by the AP. Branstad's office has denied a handful of others because of incomplete paperwork or unpaid court costs.

"Wow ? that seems pretty low," said Rita Bettis, lobbyist for the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, which was posting a how-to guide online Sunday to help felons through a process that has confused some seasoned elections officials. Bettis said felons struggling to re-enter society may be less interested in voting than the general population because they have other concerns, but making it easier for them to do so is good public policy.

Henry Straight, who wants to serve on the town council in the tiny western Iowa community of Arthur, is among those whose paperwork wasn't complete. Straight can't vote or hold office because as a teenager in Wisconsin in the 1980s, he was convicted of stealing a pop machine and fleeing while on bond.

Straight spent a year on the effort and hired a lawyer for $500 to help. Yet he was notified by the governor's office last month that he hadn't submitted a full credit report, only a summary, or documentation showing he had paid off decades-old court costs.

"They make the process just about impossible," said Straight, 40, a truck driver. "I hired a lawyer to navigate it for me and I still got rejected. Isn't that amazing?"

Iowa's process also includes a 31-question application that asks for information such as the address of the judge who handled the conviction. Felons also must supply a criminal history report, which takes weeks and costs $15. Then the review can take up to six months.

Critics say the process is too onerous and that allowing felons to vote helps them reintegrate into society. They say Iowa's process disenfranchises the poor, who don't have money to pay off debts, and blacks, who make up a disproportionate number of felons. They also point out that requiring a credit report is likely scaring off felons with financial problems.

"Iowa is in a dwindling minority of extremely restrictive states," said Marc Lauer, executive director of the Sentencing Project, a national group that advocates for policies to make it easier for felons to vote. For felons, Branstad is "making your right to vote contingent on your financial abilities."

The trend in the U.S. since 1996 has been to expand felon voting rights and make it easier to have them restored, according to a report from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Kentucky, Florida and Virginia are the other states that require felons to apply to the governor, but they don't require a credit report. Thirty-eight states allow most felons to automatically regain their voting rights once they complete their sentences, according to the report. Maine and Vermont never take away voting rights. Others require felons to wait a certain amount of time before becoming eligible.

Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht said Iowa's policy helps ensure felons pay restitution to victims and that he expected more to apply over time. He said the credit report helps officials verify those debts are paid. He noted the application is two pages long and available online with a "frequently asked questions" document.

Still, some felons have given up. Henry Straight's cousin, Richard Straight, 65, said he has struggled with addiction to drugs and crime. He said he would like to vote in the upcoming presidential election, but it's not worth the fight.

"I've only got a few years left of living. I might as well kick back and relax and live my life instead of fighting the system like that," he said.

Iowa had long been one of the most restrictive states for felons' voting rights. When Branstad served as governor from 1982 to 1998, he has said he restored thousands of felons' rights through a similar application process.

Branstad's successor, Vilsack, continued that policy until his 2005 executive order that automatically restored voting rights for felons once they left prison or parole. Republicans, including Branstad, criticized the move as politically motivated. Up to 100,000 felons had their rights restored under the policy, which was in effect until after Branstad won election to a fifth term in November 2010.

The state's new top elections official, Republican Secretary of State Matt Schultz, urged Branstad to reinstate the application process to "send a message to Iowa's voters that their voting privilege is sacred and will not be compromised."

In rescinding Vilsack's policy, Branstad said applying for citizenship rights "is an important and necessary aspect of an offender's process of reintegration."

Henry Straight said he would try to obtain the missing documentation and resubmit his application.

Ironically, he said he would like to be able to vote for Branstad, calling the governor a proven leader.

"But if you can't vote," he said, "you are nobody."

Sudan students at forefront of rising social unrest

Khartoum has seen an outburst of social unrest in the past week, driven by rampant inflation and simmering discontent, with the regime determined to crush a movement led by Sudanese students that has strong historical resonance.

The widening anti-government protests, which persist despite the security forces' policy of violently dispersing them, began as a student demonstration outside the University of Khartoum on June 16 against the sharp rise in food and fuel prices and quickly spread to other universities in the capital.

The University of Khartoum was the cradle of Sudan's first post-independence revolution, as protests there in 1964 led to a mass uprising that toppled the military dictatorship then in power, in what became known as the October revolution.

Opposition youth group Girifna published a story on its website on Monday entitled: "Khartoum University: heartbeat of the Sudanese revolution."

But the students now pushing for change face daunting challenges, particularly the repressive tactics of the ubiquitous security forces and the systematic infiltration of the universities by the regime, according to Nagi Musa, a medical student and member of Girifna (Arabic for 'We're fed up').

"It is extremely difficult to have any public activity... The government is trying to take the space inside the universities, because they think it's a danger to them," he told AFP, describing how a group of pro-regime students had visited one of the main campuses earlier that day carrying metal bars and knives.

"The (ruling) National Congress Party have resources. They have money, and through this they employ a lot of security people," said the student activist, who was detained for two weeks in January.

The riot police and agents working for Sudan's feared National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) have, as in the past, demonstrated a zero tolerance policy towards the protesters, firing tear gas, beating them with batons and making sweeping arrests.

Amnesty International said on Friday that scores of activists had been detained since the demonstrations began.

AFP saw pictures of one, arrested while protesting at Sudan University on Tuesday, who had scars on his back, allegedly from being beaten while in custody, where he also had both his eyebrows shaved off.

A senior member of the NISS told an AFP correspondent, following his arrest at the University of Khartoum for taking photos, that the situation around the universities was "very sensitive."

The government actually closed the Khartoum university for more than two months earlier this year after students clashed with riot police in December, following a sit-in over a dispute over university fees that spilled into the surrounding streets.

Sudanese academics say that despite the recent student demonstrations, the universities are not the hotbeds of political activism that they used to be, which partly explains why they have failed to bring large numbers onto the streets so far.

Omar al-Bashir's regime, which celebrates 23 years in power next week, has successfully depoliticised the universities, says mathematics professor, Mohamed El-Tom, who was expelled from the University of Khartoum in 1992.

El-Tom, who has published research on the decline in higher education under Bashir, says NCP supporters now dominate the student union and the administrative staff at the universities are government appointees.

The policy of dramatically expanding and Islamising higher education in the 1990s has also relentlessly undermined standards, helping to explain why students do not command the respect that they used to, says El-Tom.

Another challenge for the activists is the fear among many Sudanese of the chaos that a revolution might usher in, given the existing conflicts in Sudan's peripheral regions such as Darfur and South Kordofan.

But Hisham Bilal, a teaching assistant at the University of Khartoum, argues that the economic crisis has now enabled student protesters to forge a link with the street.

"Put simply, hunger creates anger. So this could lead to more widespread social unrest," he said.

The protests remain small compared with the mass demonstrations that swept neighbouring Egypt last year and toppled long-time strong man, Hosni Mubarak.

But they come amid a rapidly deteriorating economic situation that has forced the government to announce drastic austerity measures and driven up the cost of living, especially for the burgeoning poor who are already struggling to cope with high food prices.

Musa, the activist with Girifna, believes that if any student gets killed this time, it could have a similar effect, recalling the death of student activist Ahmed al-Qureshi in 1964 which sparked the October Revolution.

"It will move a lot of people. I think it will have a big influence, and the government knows this and it is afraid," he said.

All-carbon solar cell draws power from near-infrared light, our energy future is literally that much brighter

Fully carbon solar cell can power up from infrared light, our future is literally that much brighter

What's this orange-like patch, you ask? It's a layer of carbon nanotubes on silicon, and it might just be instrumental to getting a lot more power out of solar cells than we're used to. Current solar power largely ignores near-infrared light and wastes about 40 percent of the potential energy it could harness. A mix of carbon nanotubes and buckyballs developed by MIT, however, can catch that near-infrared light without degrading like earlier composites. The all-carbon formula doesn't need to be thickly spread to do its work, and it simply lets visible light through -- it could layer on top of a traditional solar cell to catch many more of the sun's rays. Most of the challenge, as we often see for solar cells, is just a matter of improving the energy conversion rate. Provided the researchers can keep refining the project, we could be looking at a big leap in solar power efficiency with very little extra footprint, something we'd very much like to see on the roof of a hybrid sedan.

Classic Treat Free Article Directory ? How to work out Hypothesis ...

In a statistical mathematics ,hypothesis testing can be consider as a method which helps in making a decision that are depends on the data. Under the study of statistics, hypothesis testing can be considered as a process of testing which are performed during the experiment to obtain a result. In a simple mean we can say that hypothesis testing checks the obtained result is in certain stage or not.

In a statistical study, hypothesis testing is popularly known as analysis for data confirmation or data analysis process. Hypothesis testing are normally used making a decision and these decision making process can be performed by using null hypothesis tests.

Types of hypothesis testing are normally used for obtaining the answers of the question. It mean to say that these testing methods representing the answers of the questions, before performing an experiment or tests and analyzes what outcomes of the experiment would lead to rejection of the null hypothesis for a pre-specified probability of an incorrect rejection. Hypothesis testing is one of the most important testing concepts in the study of statistics. The concept of hypothesis testing is used for performing various purposes. For example: we want to use two sample t-tests in the case when we have two samples of variables data and we required to checks if they represent the different population. The concept of hypothesis testing can be categorized into two different categories that are given below:

A ) Null hypothesis

B ) Alternate hypothesis

The null hypothesis is a type of Hypothesis Testing that shows the no changes in the statement. In the same aspect alternate hypothesis shows the changes in the experiment.

Null hypothesis: the most common type of hypothesis testing is null hypothesis. In the statistical hypothesis testing, a null hypothesis can be denoted by the symbol Ho. The null hypothesis can be considered as a statement about the world from which we obtained the data. Null hypothesis contains all the relevant data which are fact in nature and there is no need to change. For example we perform an experiment with the coin then a statement arises that says ?the coin is fair? which can be consider as an example of a null hypothesis. The basic goal of null hypothesis? to expressed? the statement? in simple and in mathematical terms.

Alternate Hypothesis: The opposing hypothesis of null hypothesis is known as alternative hypothesis. In the statistical mathematics the alternate hypothesis can be represented as H1. The basic goal of alternative hypothesis is to show the difference in the population. It means to say that through the use of null hypothesis changes can be made into the experiment.

In mathematics idol and reliable testing make a important role in the decision making about the claim by answering the question. The processing of hypothesis testing can be performed by three ways:

A)??? By applying null and hypothesis testing.

B)???? By calculating the test statistic

C)???? By performing the p value and conclusion.

D)??? Finally performing the decision.

The basic role of hypotheses testing can be considered as useful in the case when they are likely to improve on the current body and that helps in getting a greater knowledge to be acquired in the future. Also, a?hypothesis?is generally not acknowledged if it defines other commonly recognized knowledge.

Editorial Windows Phone 8 looks good, but can it uproot those entrenched in other ecosystems

At the tail end of Microsoft's marathon Windows Phone Summit keynote, the company's own Kevin Gallo said the following: "Everyone in the Windows ecosystem benefits." He was waxing poetic about the myriad new features coming to the outfit's latest and greatest mobile operating system, and nothing about his quote was incorrect. Developers will adore the shared codebase. Users will adore the new additions to the software framework. Carriers probably won't shun the opportunity to push yet another platform this holiday season. But the one word in there that sticks out most to me is this: "Windows."

I've been wrestling with the ecosystem issue for some time, but the gravity of it has never been so evident. Starting in 2008, one could argue that it stopped being purely about hardware. Purely about design. Purely about software. Purely about partnerships. Particularly when it came to smartphones. Slate-style handsets were en vogue years ago, with design changing extremely little and software becoming ever more of a factor. But it wasn't just software in the simplest sense -- it was how the software was interconnected to every other piece of the digital ecosystem. Phones were no longer standalone devices; they were simply the most convenient entry into a rabbit hole that Microsoft's going to have a tough time digging people out of. Allow me to explain.
