E-commerce solution marifunc.org

Ecommerce website means the conducting of business communication and transactions over networks and through computers. Specifically, ecommerce solution is the buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of funds, through digital communications (or Online). Ecommerce also often refers to transactions occurring on the Internet, such as credit card purchases at web sites. Internet payment provider, a business providing merchant account establishment and transaction processing services. It may also provide ecommerce software and handle such things as digital delivery.

Ecommerce website is essential for the future growth of your business. We build websites that turn your visitors into customers. Soppnox solutions integrate communications, data management and security to offer clients ecommerce website solutions to businesses worldwide. It creates increases in revenue and profitability, reduces overheads and can revolutionize your customer service.

Future of ecommerce

According to a new study from the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, This is such a dynamic field. Every day is a new day in the world of ecommerce. We see a lot of things, and looking in the near future, ecommerce will become the industrial revolution of the 21st Century. Certainly see happening is the decline of the revenue-share business model. EBusiness still has huge untapped potential & continues to grow robustly and hosted providers have revenue-share pricing models.

We personally believe that, over time, well see a major decline in the industrial economy, lot of larger merchants, particularly, moving away from those providers because they are not happy and willing to share a percentage of the order value. Most of the ecommerce and shopping-cart web development providers are focused on a more pure-play, Internet based solution. However, as the market consolidates, we think there will be more multi channel integration offerings. Among ecommerce providers, you?ll begin to see solutions that target specific verticals that weve probably already seen in the enterprise market. Along the same lines, because the customers and merchants are getting more sophisticated, and they are getting more comfortable with the online commerce world, they are beginning to demand those rich functionalities specific to their vertical and industry.

I see multi language rising into prominence because a lot of the growth in the ecommerce world is coming from abroad. U.S. merchants and North American, English-speaking merchants are looking to expand their market beyond their local country, and they are looking to tap into the world market. They will want to provide their store in a variety of different languages. I see the emergence of mobile commerce. Its beginning to happen. People are getting more and more web savvy when it comes to cell phones. Its more popular in Japan and Europe, but I believe U.S. merchants are likely to incorporate that.

I see the integration with other technologies out there such as social networks, playing a role in the ecommerce world. Social networks can influence the popularity of a product, and the question will be how you can integrate that into your ecommerce offering and make that more engaging?

Annan holds crunch talks with Syria's Assad

Kofi Annan on Tuesday met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for crunch talks amid global outrage over the Houla massacre of more than 100 people, as the UN said most of them had been summarily executed.

On his arrival in Damascus on Monday, UN and Arab League peace envoy Annan called the "tragic" massacre in the central region "an appalling moment with profound consequences."

The international community has reacted with horror over the deaths of at least 108 people at the village of Taldu near Houla on Friday and Saturday, among them 49 children and 34 women, many shot dead at point-blank range.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimated on Tuesday that fewer than 20 of the 108 Houla victims were killed by artillery and tank fire.

"Most of the rest of the victims in Taldu, one of the areas of Houla, were summarily executed in two separate incidents," UNHCR spokesman Rupert Colville said.

Local residents blamed the executions on a paramilitary group that "essentially supports the government forces," he added.

French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday announced the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador in response to the Houla killings, and said Paris would host a new meeting of the Friends of Syria group in July.

Australia also expelled Syria's top diplomat over the "hideous and brutal" massacre, with Foreign Minister Bob Carr saying he expected other countries to follow suit.

"This is the most effective way we've got of sending a message of revulsion to the Syrian government," Carr said, adding Syrian charge d'affaires Jawdat Ali and another unnamed official had 72 hours to leave the country.

Germany also said on Tuesday it would expel the Syrian ambassador, national agency DPA reported, saying that he too has 72 hours to leave.

Assad received Annan in Damascus, state news agency SANA reported, a day after the former UN chief said he intended to hold "serious and frank discussions" with Syria's president.

Annan did not elaborate, but his comments reflected intensifying pressure on his mission aimed at ending almost 15 months of bloodshed in Syria.

The Assad government has been using brutal force to crush an Arab Spring-inspired uprising, triggering a low-level insurgency by some regime opponents who have taken up arms.

The violence has killed more than 13,000 people, most of them civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based watchdog.

And it has persisted despite the presence of more than 280 UN military observers as part of Annan's six-point blueprint aimed at ending the conflict.

At least 19 people were killed on Tuesday as fierce fighting was reported across Syria, including seven in central Homs province where last week's massacre occurred, said the Observatory.

After news of the Houla killings emerged on Saturday, Hollande said Syria's leaders would have to answer for their "murderous folly," and Pope Benedict XVI called on Syria's religious communities to cooperate to bring peace to the country.

Canada called on the UN Security Council to take "stronger diplomatic action," including economic sanctions against the regime over its "senseless slaughter of its own people."

The UN Security Council -- where Syrian allies Russia and China wield veto powers -- had on Sunday condemned the Damascus government's use of heavy artillery in the assault on Houla.

Annan told reporters in Damascus that he was "personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houla," saying the UN body was right to condemn it.

He urged Damascus to take "bold steps" to signal it is serious in its intention to resolve the crisis peacefully.

"And this message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

However, the Security Council's condemnation of the Syrian government's role in the massacre has done little to bring the international powers together to end the crisis.

Britain and France had proposed a text making an even stronger condemnation of the Assad government, but Russia defended its key Middle East ally at the Security Council and said both sides bore responsibility.

"Here we have a situation where both sides clearly had a hand in the fact that peaceful citizens were killed," said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Assad's domestic opponents renewed their call to the international community to help Syrians defend themselves.

"The Syrian National Council calls (on) brothers and friends of the Syrian people to help before it's too late," the exiled group said in a statement.

The Free Syrian Army has warned that unless the international community takes concrete action it will no longer be bound by Annan's plan.

Israeli, Syria's arch-foe, on Tuesday branded Assad a "murderer" and urged support for the Syrian people.

"The reactions until now have been declarations; unfortunately, declarations don't stop murders and assassinations," President Shimon Peres said at a joint news conference with his German counterpart Joachim Gauck.

"I think the time has come to help the Syrians achieve peace and regain their freedom," he added.

Making a Seamless Move to the Denver Area | Real Estate Site

When it comes time to move you belongings to a new big city, especially one with the population of Denver you want to be sure that you allot time for research and looking into the many aspects of the area you will be relocating to. There are a lot of great neighborhoods in Denver and finding the right one for your family is definitely something to consider.

This is why it is wise to look into the part of Denver you will be living in. What are the schools like? What kind of family oriented attractions might there be? How close will you be to adequate medical care? Granted, medical care in larger cities is usually quite easy to find but if you have an ill family member or someone who may be travelling to the doctors often then you want to choose a location that is conveniently located.

Once you have decided upon the home you will move to then comes the actual physical moving portion of the relocation. There are a lot of things you will need in order to pack your things properly and make sure they get shipped with the least possible damage or error. This is especially true for long distance moves. For example, if you are moving from Miami, FL to Denver, CO then this is considered a long distance move.

This is where many people who decide to use substandard moving companies have troubles. It is quite important to choose a moving company that has received good reviews from other people who have used it. It is also important that you decide whether you will be packing your own things or having the moving company carry out that task for you. If you will be packing yourself then you will need a number of supplies like moving boxers, tape and popcorn stuffing for fragile packages.

Commit yourself to building a strong relationship with your customer base, if that is the type of relationship you want. Drive sales to your site with simple advertising messages delivered via social media. If you desire getting on the same level as your customers, just say hello to them! Your customers will let you know where to go from there.

It is important to used varied content to entice people to follow the social media marketing campaign that you are promoting. Generate posts that relate to your niche. These could include stories or perhaps external provider links can be made available from within your industry. Try running contests, posting pictures or asking questions. Interact with those whom you follow. Engage them with your product as opposed to using sales pitches repeatedly. Try to find ways to have customers think about how your business and products adds to their way of life, rather than how you will affect them financially.

Use the programs Twellow or Tweepi to find the best Twitter followers. These programs are designed to locate the highest attention lists, and also who runs them. Then, you can send messages suggesting that your account be added to their lists.

You cannot do well in social media if people aren?t visiting your profile or are not interested in your content. Take some time planning, writing and then proofreading the content to make sure it is engaging and informative. You can add captivating headlines and sub-headlines as a polishing touch.

If you tweet only quotations from other people, your followers will quickly learn that you don?t have anything of your own to say. Your followers will view the material as filler material, which is insignificant and often ignored. Only post things that have something to do with your company or if you do it yourself.

Users can update their location through their mobile phones with Facebook Places. Build your own Facebook place and give your customers a discount for checking in ? they can show you they?ve done it on their smartphone. Foursquare has a similar feature you should think about using.

When you are looking to create content to put on your Twitter of Facebook, make sure it is proofread. You should make sure your work looks professional. Limit your use of abbreviations in your writing when using sites such as Twitter. Try really hard to make sure your content looks good.

Until you develop you own unique style in the social media world, mimic the style of those that you admire. You need to find out how your competition works in the field of social media marketing, then you should copy it for a while, so you can find out what makes you and the people you service successful. Discover their social profiles. Analyze what they post, as well as the specials that they run.

Have a party organized around Twitter. In other words you should organize a certain time when your audience is going to use Twitter in order to chat about certain specific topics using hash tags. Other bloggers are a great source to help advise your customers. Make sure all of them blog about your upcoming party to their own unique audience.

You should find different ways to interact with customers on a personal, as well as professional, level. Leave them comments on their Facebook status or blog post if you feel that this is appropriate. This does not mean jumping in on a personal exchange, but it should be aimed at issues that are relevant to your product or service.

There are countless advantages of using social media marketing for your business. Most people have profiles and are ready to interact with you and learn more about your products. These tips have opened your mind to the things that social media makes possible. Sign up on popular networks and start working.

Cows crash backyard party, help themselves to beer

Cows on the loose in Boxford, Mass., crashed a backyard party and helped themselves to beer. WHDH-TV's Tim Caputo reports.

By WHDH.com

Cows on the loose in Boxford, Mass., crashed a backyard party last weekend, and went right for the beer.

?They enjoyed it. There?s no doubt about it. They went right for the beer and then when one was done, they?d knock another one over and take care of that beer,? Lt. James Riter of the Boxford Police Department told NBC affiliate WHDH.com.

Police said they heard reports of screams from a group of women as five or six cows stumbled into the yard, eagerly hurtling toward the beers.

?They got up as the cows went toward the table. They stepped back and the cows took over the table, knocking over the beers with their noses, drinking the beer off the table. They went to the recycling bin to find any leftovers,? Riter told the TV station.

A caller told the 911 dispatcher: ?We thought they were deer, but they're huge, huge, huge cows. There's got to be five or six of them.?

Andrea Poritzky also called 911 after spotting "about six cows" in her yard.

"I don't own cows,? she said.

?I was initially a little nervous. And then after I found it very comical and not very surprising due to the fact that we live in the country here,? Poritzky said.

A police escort rounded up the cows and returned them to a farm about a mile away.

Building Relationships Through Social Media Networks

Social Media

Social networking has become part of world culture in the last decade or so. Facebook currently rules the roost, closing in on one billion users, while others such as Twitter and Google+, with over 100 million users each, are very popular and growing. There is also a wide variation of social networks available, from those that are music orientated like SoundCloud to professional networks like LinkedIn. People want to get in touch with others, from catching up with old school friends to making contacts in their field of work, and social media networks allow them to do just that. Inevitably, social media networks have influenced the world of online dating.

Online dating, which arrived in the mid 1990?s, is currently rolling away from the traditional giants such as eHarmony and Match.com towards social dating sites. Since social networks helped people become more comfortable with sharing personal information online, these dating sites combined a traditional dating site with elements of a social network. Sites such as Badoo, Zoosk, theComplete.me and Mambonow pave the way for singles online.

Taking Badoo as an example, it looks just like a typical dating site. You can search for people to meet by their age, gender, body type or even their star sign. However, some of the key differences between traditional online dating and a social dating site like Badoo are that in the latter, users have the option to pursue any type of relationship, the wide range of interactive content and games can provide ideal ice-breaking for potential relationships and these relationships can also be vetted by friends and family. Badoo alone now has over 150 million registered users worldwide. To give that figure perspective, if Badoo were a country it would have more inhabitants than Russia. Badoo is currently said to be the fastest growing social network for meeting new people. Meeting new people is subsequently the main difference between the likes of Badoo and Facebook, which is set-up more towards connecting with those you already know.

The Internet is constantly evolving and will continue to provide people with a multitude of different opportunities to build relationships and look for love. Online demand is increasing as more people become accustom to seeking alternatives to meeting people in face-to-face situations. Social dating sites are the latest trend to catch fire online, and it will be interesting to see how they evolve. In a few years? time something else might come along and this type of platform might become irrelevant in the online dating world, just as MySpace, Bebo and Friendster were steamrolled by Facebook. On the other hand, sites such as Badoo might become the Facebook of online dating, continue to evolve and dominate the market, while the likes of eHarmony crumble.

What the rise of these social dating sites does definitely suggest is that the old stigma attached to online dating is fading and that people seem to be no longer ashamed to be looking for a relationship on the web. The younger generations are used to sharing their lives online, and the older ones are adapting to that behavior as well. Things that traditional dating sites have some problems with, like lying about your age and what you look like, are factors that are less likely to exist through social media sites, especially if the user signs in through Facebook and their details are automatically filled in for them.

Whether everyone likes it or not, the fact remains that online dating has changed, and these social dating sites have added a new twist to relationship building through social media networks.

'Personality genes' may help account for longevity

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? "It's in their genes" is a common refrain from scientists when asked about factors that allow centenarians to reach age 100 and beyond. Up until now, research has focused on genetic variations that offer a physiological advantage such as high levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol. But researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University have found that personality traits like being outgoing, optimistic, easygoing, and enjoying laughter as well as staying engaged in activities may also be part of the longevity genes mix.

The findings, published online May 21 in the journal Aging, come from Einstein's Longevity Genes Project, which includes over 500 Ashkenazi Jews over the age of 95, and 700 of their offspring. Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jews were selected because they are genetically homogeneous, making it easier to spot genetic differences within the study population.

Previous studies have indicated that personality arises from underlying genetic mechanisms that may directly affect health. The present study of 243 of the centenarians (average age 97.6 years, 75 percent women) was aimed at detecting genetically-based personality characteristics by developing a brief measure (the Personality Outlook Profile Scale, or POPS) of personality in centenarians.

"When I started working with centenarians, I thought we'd find that they survived so long in part because they were mean and ornery," said Nir Barzilai, M.D., the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research, director of Einstein's Institute for Aging Research and co-corresponding author of the study. "But when we assessed the personalities of these 243 centenarians, we found qualities that clearly reflect a positive attitude towards life. Most were outgoing, optimistic and easygoing. They considered laughter an important part of life and had a large social network. They expressed emotions openly rather than bottling them up." In addition, the centenarians had lower scores for displaying neurotic personality and higher scores for being conscientious compared with a representative sample of the U.S. population.

"Some evidence indicates that personality can change between the ages of 70 and 100, so we don't know whether our centenarians have maintained their personality traits across their entire lifespans," continued Dr. Barzilai. "Nevertheless, our findings suggest that centenarians share particular personality traits and that genetically-based aspects of personality may play an important role in achieving both good health and exceptional longevity."

The study is titled "Positive attitude towards life and emotional expression as personality phenotypes for centenarians." The POPS was developed by lead author Kaori Kato, Psy.D., now at Weill Cornell Medical College, who validated it through comparisons with two previously established measures of personality traits. Other authors of the study were Richard Zweig, Ph.D., assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Einstein and director of the Older Adult Program at Ferkauf, and Gil Atzmon, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine and of genetics at Einstein.

Future begins now | The Austin Daily Herald

Published 4:00am Wednesday, May 23, 2012

As the Vision 2020 project committee kicks off, there?s still many goals to define and accomplish. Committees are meeting regularly to hone their goals and map out plans to get there. Over the past several weeks the Daily Herald has featured the Vision 2020 projects that will shape Austin for the next eight years. This is the third and final look at the ideas Austin residents hope to accomplish by 2020.

Preschool teacher Amy Goette asks her students what they are going to do after school during a snack break Thursday morning at the Community Learning Center. - Eric Johnson/photodesk@austindailyherald.com

Leading education

It?s no secret education is important in Austin.

From the Community Learning Center all the way through Riverland Community College, Austinites have plenty of schooling options. Yet the Vision 2020 ?education leaders? committee is dedicated to making Austin?s schools a leader throughout the state, though committee members are still figuring out what that will mean.

?As the world continues to change, we understand that education needs to change with it,? said Randy Kramer, chairman of the education committee and Ameriprise financial advisor.

As many of the initial ideas dealt with education, few were surprised it made the top 10.

?The community really believes that education is a priority to having a successful and dynamic town,? said Austin Superintendent David Krenz.

Yet the committee?s mission ? in effect to create a strong network between existing education outlets for the community ? is fairly broad, so there?s plenty of room for interpretation.

That?s why committee members are evaluating what resources each school district has ? from Pacelli Catholic Schools and Austin Public Schools to Riverland. Though the committee is mostly composed of local educators, committee members say they hope to get more volunteers to help decide what it wants to accomplish and how each school?s assets can help.

?We have to get some definite goals set up,? said Greg Larson, Austin Public School board member and education committee member.

The education committee will meet next at 6 p.m. June 12. While members originally planned to meet at the Town Center, the meeting could be switched to another location depending on how many volunteers attend.

?We need to get input from a lot of sources throughout the community to make good decisions on the current state of education,? Kramer said.

?Community pride

Vision 2020?s ?community pride and spirit? committee faces a couple challenges that other committees may not have.

First, it has to define what community pride and spirit actually means. Second, it has to define some measure of what success is. But the committee members have time, and they have only met once.

While the committee must have a chair by June, it may take until fall or later for concrete ideas to form, said Austin Area Chamber of Commerce executive director and Vision 2020 steering committee member Sandy Forstner.

?It?s not something that?s going to happen overnight,? he said.

He added that people will join and leave committees throughout the eight years, so projects and ideas will evolve, as well.

?The doors are always open to all these committees,? Forstner said. ?If a person hasn?t been to a committee meeting yet, they can still join, and they will be able to join on an ongoing basis for a very long time.?

Committee members tossed around a few vague ideas at their first meeting on May 3, such as small-scale neighborhood fixer-uppers, expanding existing programs like Habitat for Humanity and Spruce Up Austin. Most have indicated that any real initiatives are unclear at this point.

One committee member, Aaron DeVries, joined because he hopes to implement more opportunities for his daughter and other parents who have children with special needs.

?We have a daughter who has special needs, and I feel there is a need for mentors for special needs in the community,? he said.

But community pride members realize their Vision 2020 committee has to focus on many sectors of the community, too.

?We?re hoping that they have multiple projects and goals,? Forstner said. ?Some short-term that are easily achieved and some long-term ? some real difference makers.?

DeVries agrees with that statement, and added that community pride means including all ethnicities, ages and abilities, as well.

Still, he knows measuring success may be subjective. He said simply an increase in people helping across the board could indicate success.

?If more people participate in the project, making Austin a better town, I guess that would be success in my perspective,? DeVries said.

The community pride committee will meet again this Thursday with hopes of appointing a chairperson.

One of the top 10 Vision 2020 ideas was the further development of the 18th Avenue NW business district, including a major push to fill the former Cash Wise and K-mart buildings, lower right. - Eric Johnson/photodesk@austindailyherald.com

Becoming business friendly

Austin business leaders aim to make Austin truly distinctive.

That?s the goal as the ?business friendly environment? project committee looks for the best ways to attract new businesses and entrepreneurs to Austin, according to John Garry, committee member and executive director of the Development Corporation of Austin.

Garry said the DCA will work closely with Vision 2020 and be one of four main entities to do so, including the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce, the Austin Main Street Project and the city of Austin through Community Development director Craig Hoium. While the group has only met once, they have a meeting May 31, where they will start to map out a timeline and how each entity fits in.

?At the next meeting, we?ll focus on how those groups, what their roles are and how they work together,? he said.

The group doesn?t have specifics yet, but committee co-chair Rick Jaacks, president and CEO of Community Bank in Austin, said the focus will be on how to make Austin stand out.

?A lot of communities offer the same things to attract new businesses, so finding a unique selling proposition is key,? he said.

One area where Austin stands out, Jaacks said, is its growth in population. The city?s total population rose 6 percent between 2000 and 2010, from 23,314 to 24,718, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, which is unique for outstate Minnesota.

?Hopefully what that means is that as the community grows, there will be a demand for additional labor,? Jaacks said.

Another factor in Austin?s favor, according to Chamber executive director Sandy Forstner, is its low unemployment rate.

While Austin historically has been insulated from economic downturns and recessions ? with roughly 3,000 of the 13,638 labor force working at either the Hormel Foods Corp. Austin plant or Quality Pork Processors ? the 2008 recession took its toll locally, even as Hormel?s profits increased during the past three years. Still, Austin?s unemployment has remained consistently below the state and national average. Austin?s non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in March, compared to 6.6 percent in Minnesota and 8.4 percent nationally, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

As the group moves forward, it will begin to analyze Austin?s strengths and weaknesses, creating an asset map of the community and developing a plan, according to the project?s other co-chair, Jim Heilman, a tax manager for CliftonLarsonAllen.

?It?s about defining what our committee is and the goals we?re going to have going forward,? he said.

?A unique Main Street

The secret to making downtown Austin the destination point all relies on two efforts: getting people outside, and finding Austin?s niche.

The committee focused on making Austin into a premier small city center is a group of 30-40 people that met for the first time this past week. The committee comprises mostly business owners, which committee chair Kiersten Hall said is a good start for a project like Vision 2020.

?We?re visionaries,? she said. ?We?re entrepreneurs. We like to do crazy things and see if it works.?

Keeping an old-fashioned, hometown feel to Austin is essential while the committee works to build it up. Hall said she thinks most people appreciate that sentiment, and it makes them want to stick around a city, which is key to the committee?s efforts to get people to come downtown. Establishing gathering places where people can see familiar faces will ensure they keep coming back.

?People need to come out of their homes,? she said. ?They need to come down and commune with one another.? She pointed to a lack of activity in the evenings as one symptom.

The key is to bring in different ideas to attract more than just business people, and the committee?s short-term target is Thursday nights, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. The farmers market kicked off Thursday as one such event to bring people downtown, but Hall hopes to generate a lot of different events that could bring in all kinds of people.

?I get on this binge where I have oodles of ideas,? she said. For example, the committee could work to bring in musical acts or a classic car show.

?It worked well for Rochester,? Hall said, referring to Rochester?s ?Thursdays on First and Third,? a weekly summer event that features food, arts and crafts, live entertainment and over 100 vendors. ?If there?s a business plan that already works, then do it.?

The concept ties in well with the committee?s second focus of establishing a theme for Austin.

That requires research, Hall said. The committee for the Vision 2020 project is starting by approaching small towns that already have a niche or theme established and trying to figure out what they did to achieve it. While the Spam Museum is a good plug for the area, Austin also needs something that focuses specifically on downtown.

When people think of Lanesboro, it brings canoes, restaurants and a playhouse to mind, Hall said. Stillwater means boats, bars along the river and warehouse retail outlets. Austin has to cement a connotation like that in people?s minds.

There?s potential for the Vision project?s goals to correlate with the Austin Main Street project, a program started in 2006 to preserve downtown as a ?healthy, vibrant, economically vital center of commerce and activity,? according to the project?s website. Austin Main Street Coordinator Sarah Douty is part of the Vision committee.

The committee is ready to get going on the project, Hall said.

?We appreciate the fact that we can start moving and shaking right away, and getting the community involved,? she said. ?It should be quite exciting, actually.?

HP to cut 27000 jobs to save up to $3.5B annually | Technology ...

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman has quantified the painful price that must be paid for the missteps of her predecessors as she tries to turn around the Silicon Valley pioneer. The bungling will wipe out 27,000 jobs so HP can save enough money to lift its earnings and invest in the development of more profitable products and service.

The streamlining announced late Wednesday amounts to the largest payroll purge in Hewlett-Packard Co.'s 73-year history. About 8 percent of HP's nearly 350,000 employees are to be gone by October 2014.

The announcement came eight months after HP hired Whitman to turn the company around. The company expects to save $3 billion to $3.5 billion annually from the job cuts and other austerity measures. HP will try to reduce the number of layoffs by offering early retirement packages.

The somber news overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. Although HP's earnings and revenue declined from a year ago, the numbers were better than analysts had projected. HP delivered another pleasant surprise by offering a forecast that raised hopes that HP may be poised to bounce back.

"While I wouldn't say we have turned the corner, we are making real progress," Whitman told analysts during a conference call.

Investors were pleased, although it wasn't clear whether their glee had more to do with the cost-cutting or the company's performance during its fiscal second quarter, which ended in April.

HP shares surged $1.97, or more than 9 percent, to $23.05 in Wednesday's extended trading following the announcements.

They're still worth just half what they were before HP parted ways with Mark Hurd, a cost-costing specialist who stepped down in 2010 amid a scandal revolving around the nature of his relationship with a former actress who worked as an HP contractor. An investigation uncovered inaccurate expense reports.

The current troubles at HP have been traced both to Hurd and his successor, Leo Apotheker, who didn't respond to the threat posed by a shift to computing on smartphones and tablets.

Whitman's plan calls for less bureaucracy so the company can respond more quickly to customer needs. She also wants to boost research and development to spur innovation.

HP, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., has been struggling to sell more personal computers and printers; demand has softened as people spend more time surfing the Web on phones and tablets such as Apple Inc.'s iPad. And the company's efforts to sell more business software and consulting services have been stymied by competition from the likes of IBM Corp. and Oracle Corp.

"Work force reductions are never easy," Whitman said Wednesday. "They adversely impact people's lives, but in this case, they are absolutely critical to the long-term health of the company. Our goal is simple: a better outcome for the customers at reduced cost for HP."

Whitman plans to funnel most of the savings from the job cuts into product development, with an emphasis on three areas: software services delivered online, a concept known as "cloud computing"; data storage and analysis; and computer security. Some of the extra cash will go toward boosting HP's earnings, too.

HP's work force has undergone several reorganizations during the past decade. Two of the biggest occurred during Hurd's regime. HP announced 14,500 job cuts in 2005 in one of his first big acts as CEO. A round of 24,600 cuts came in 2008 after HP bought technology consulting service EDS for $13.9 billion.

HP did not say where it would make the latest cuts. It is combining its printer and PC divisions, which could reduce some overhead.

In related moves, Whitman is changing the leadership at HP's recently acquired Autonomy division, which makes software that finds and analyzes data within companies and government agencies.

Bill Veghte, HP's chief strategy officer, is replacing Autonomy founder Mike Lynch in an effort to boost the division's financial performance. The shake-up is likely to amplify investor concern about whether HP blundered last year when it paid $11 billion for Autonomy. Apotheker announced the deal in August, just a month before he was fired.

Whitman told analysts she still believes the Autonomy acquisition was smart.

The company earned $1.6 billion, or 80 cents per share, in February through April. That's 31 percent less than the $2.3 billion, or $1.05 per share, it earned a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, the company said it earned 98 cents per share. That topped the average estimate of 91 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue fell 3 percent to $30.7 billion, but that was about $800 million above analysts' average projection.

To pay for severance and other restructuring costs, HP expects to take a pre-tax charge of about $1.7 billion in the current fiscal year, which ends in October. About $1 billon of those charges will come in the current quarter, which ends in July. HP expects to record $1.8 billion more in charges through fiscal 2014.

The company also expects to register a charge of $1.2 billion to account for the declining value of the Compaq computer brand. HP bought Compaq a decade ago in a deal that many shareholders, including the son of a company founder William Hewlett, tried to block.

App Garden: A Swiss Army Knife for Your Phone | Android.AppStorm

About a year ago, I reviewed an app called Extensive Notes for Android right here on Android.AppStorm. Among a whole army of note-taking apps on Android, Extensive Notes differentiated itself by providing a huge array of small but useful tools to supplement the core feature.

Fluffy Delusions, the developer behind Extensive Notes, recently released a new app called App Garden, which takes all those extra tools and wraps them together into a single multi-purpose package. The point of the app is to provide dozens of tiny but useful tools to help you with day-to-day tasks without having to install separate apps for each one.

In this post, I?ll try to make sense of what the app has to offer, where it shines and where it needs more work. It is a tough ask, mind you, since there are so many tangentially different things you can do with this thing. Let?s start with a quick overview of what it has on offer.

Swiss Army Knife? and Then Some!

Calling App Garden a Swiss Army Knife for Android might well be an understatement. It come with not 10, not 20, but a whopping 45 apps at last count ? some of them even with more apps within them. I?ll not bother covering everything here for the sake of brevity, but here?s a quick sample:

  • Health related tools like BMI calculator, calorie intake, body fat, heart rate, and metabolic rate calculators
  • Language tools like dictionary, thesaurus, spelling suggestions, phrase lookup, word suggestions, and pronunciation guides.
  • Music and movie related tools including album art search, artist information, and film reviews and info.
  • Finance related tools like mortgage calculator, tip calculator, stock quotes, and tax calculators.
  • Knowledge and general information tools like Wikipedia search, weather, urban dictionary, and area code lookup.
  • Miscellaneous utilities like reminders, stopwatch, timer, unit and currency conversion, notes, audio recorder, and system stats.
A very small subset of the tools in App Garden

A very small subset of the tools in App Garden

And trust me, I?ve not even listed half of what?s available. As you can tell from the list, the developer went all out in trying to cram anything and everything that one might want on their phone into one tiny package (and I do mean tiny ? it?s under 1 MB).

On deeper inspection it is evident how they have managed to do that, but I?ll come to that later. For now, I?ll focus on that fact that all of this does prove useful when you get down to using it. Most smartphone users tend to download and install tens, if not hundreds of apps on their phones, only to use them just once in a while, so having all these small tools waiting for you to feel the need for one, without hogging all the memory and screen space on your phone, can be quite empowering.

Of course, you can expect to be sliding through a long list of nearly 50 apps to find what you need, so there?s the ?Favorites? list so you can pin the ones that you think you will be using most and have really quick access to just those at a glance. As far as app-wide features go, this is pretty much as fart as App Garden goes. You can set your preferred location, currency and units from the app?s Settings menu, so the tools will start up the way you need them.

The Favorites list and Settings

The Favorites list and Settings

It is hard to choose favorites when there are so many things one can do with the app, but if I were to highlight some of my most used tools from App Garden, it would have to be the timer, financial calculators and unit conversion. Although the unit conversion toolset contains currency as well, that one?s pretty much unusable because the list of currencies is not sorted in any decipherable way. Given how many options there are, it is close to impossible to find what you are looking for without literally going through all hundred-odd entries one by one!

Calculators and the rather intimidating list of currencies

Minimalism Above All Else

So here?s the downside of trying to cram all of that power into a tiny little package: all you get are the bare basics. Sure, the app feels extremely minimalistic and turns out to be pretty snappy in the process, but there are times when it leaves much to be desired.

Take the timer, for example: you can set a time and the app will count down just fine, but there is no audio or vibration notification at the end. You need to be looking at your phone to be able to tell when it reaches zero. The Start and Stop buttons are always there and active, so I can tap the Start button while the timer is on, although nothing happens. This is a common pattern across most of the tools.

Also, tools often have the exact same look, with absolutely no way to tell what they are supposed to do. Look at the example below. The two screens belong to the Timer and the Audio Recording tool. Can you tell which is which?

To top it off, a big chunk of the functionality is dependent on an active data connection. That would be generally fine, as long as the app made it clear that it couldn?t do something because you don?t have a data connection. Instead, App Garden just throws a ?An error has occurred? message at you. The least one would expect is a message explaining what the error was.

Another example of simple oversight is the list of currencies, which (as I mentioned before) is not sorted in any decipherable way. It is minor niggles like this that take away from an otherwise excellent and well rounded toolset.

Conclusion

At its core, App Garden gets the idea right ? it?s a set of disparate tools all packaged together for you to use the way you need to. It is a no-frills yet comprehensive app that set out to do some simple things and do them well. There are niggles and surprising omissions that keep the app from being really great, but don?t really take away too much from the feat it achieves in the end.
